Summertime is always a great time of year for an epic road trip. It’s when you can crank the music up, put the windows down (or crank the A/C too!), and have stretches of highway at your fingertips. There’s little more to bring excitement to summer than the feeling of the open road.

If you feel your toes are itching to put the pedal to the metal, you’ve come to the right place. These five road trip destinations will free you this summer while exploring classic Americana on Route 66. (Don’t forget to stop at Drive Now first for your reliable used car from the best auto sales in Phoenix!)

1. Grand Canyon National Park

A mere 3-hour drive from Phoenix to the Grand Canyon, this classic destination can be visited as a day trip or the start of a cross-country adventure. The National Park Foundation has deemed this destination to be a sight beyond words and with good reason – the 277-mile-long stretch of American wilderness is breathtaking. If you haven’t visited, this is the summer to make it a must.

2. Route 66’s Singing Road

There’s nothing more classic than a drive down Route 66 (now known as I-40), The Main Street of America. This highway stretches from Los Angeles to Chicago, but you won’t want to miss what passes through Albuquerque, New Mexico – when the highway starts to sing. Rumble strips on the road have been calibrated so that as you drive, the vibrations in your car begin to take on the tune of “America the Beautiful”. That’s one way to “get your kicks on Route 66”!

3. Petroglyphs National Monument

While driving down Route 66, you must take a quick pit stop in New Mexico’s Petroglyph National Monument. Canyon hiking trips include the short trails of Boca Negra to the 2.2 mi hike in Rinconada, plus day sites for a stroll around the cinder cone. Throughout the area, you’ll discover hundreds of petroglyphs featuring designs carved into volcanic rocks by the Spanish and Native Americans over 500 years ago.

4. London Bridge

If a trip to the coast is more of your idea of a summer road trip, why not take Route 66 in the other direction, stopping over at Lake Havasu City’s London Bridge? The London Bridge, now crossing the Colorado River, formerly spanned the River Thames in London until it was dismantled in the 1960s and relocated to Arizona. The old masonry remains from the bridge’s long journey across the pond, but don’t worry, this London Bridge won’t be ‘falling down’ anytime soon!

5. Hollywood Forever Cemetery

Your trip down Route 66 will drop you at one of America’s best-known cemeteries. With Paramount Studios located just a block away, this destination isn’t as spooky as some other cemetery tours and is filled with more famous names than you can count. Actors, directors, and writers in the film industry, as well as recognizable names that helped to shape the city, find their final resting places on the grounds. You might even recognize the area from some of your favorite movies and television shows, such as the season finale of Breaking Bad, making this destination a memorable and interesting ending to an exciting summer trip.

When planning a summer road trip, wherever you choose to go, you must have the right vehicle to take you there.
